Before paying any fee, check that the university is recognised by UGC and that the course is approved by its regulator, such as AICTE, NMC, PCI, COA, BCI, NCTE or INC. This guide shows where each official list is and how to spot fake universities.
Every year some students lose money and years by joining an institution that cannot award a valid degree, or a course that its regulator never approved. A few minutes on official websites can prevent this. Do these checks before paying any fee, and do not rely only on a brochure, advertisement or agent.
Step 1: Is the university recognised by UGC?
In India, degrees are awarded by universities: central, state, deemed-to-be and state private universities. Colleges award degrees through the university they are affiliated to. The University Grants Commission (UGC) website lists them under its HEIs menu:
UGC also lists colleges under sections 2(f) and 12(B) and autonomous colleges. If a college says it is affiliated to a university, check that university’s own website for its list of affiliated colleges.
Step 2: Check the UGC fake universities list
UGC publishes a list of fake universities. As of February 2026 it named 32 institutions across 12 states and union territories, with the largest number in Delhi, followed by Uttar Pradesh. Names can sound very official, so search the list carefully. UGC advises students and parents to verify any institution before taking admission.
Step 3: Is the course approved by its regulator?
Professional courses need approval from a specific council in addition to university recognition:
- Engineering, technology, management and similar technical courses: All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). AICTE runs an annual approval process; institutes should be able to show their current approval.
- MBBS: National Medical Commission (NMC), which publishes a list of colleges teaching MBBS with intake and recognition details, and a college and course search.
- BDS: Dental Council of India, now the National Dental Commission. Its website has a college search and permitted seats.
- B.Pharm and D.Pharm: Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) lists approved degree and diploma institutions.
- B.Arch: Council of Architecture (COA), which publishes approval notices for institutions.
- B.Sc Nursing and other nursing courses: Indian Nursing Council (INC) lists recognised nursing institutions for 2025-26 and 2026-27 and universities offering recognised nursing qualifications.
- Law (LLB, BA LLB): Bar Council of India (BCI) approves centres of legal education.
- Teacher education (B.Ed, ITEP): National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) recognises teacher-education institutions.
- Agriculture: Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) lists agricultural universities and has an accreditation board for agricultural education.
Step 4: Match the details exactly
- Exact name and address: some fake or unapproved institutes use names close to famous ones.
- Exact course and intake: approval is for specific courses and seat numbers. A college approved for one course may not be approved for another.
- Current year: approvals are given year by year in many fields. Check the list for the academic year you are joining.
Step 5: Look at quality signals
Once approval is confirmed, look at NAAC accreditation (for the institution), NBA accreditation (for specific technical programmes) and the NIRF subject rankings. NBA, for example, accredits only programmes that are already AICTE-approved.
Keep a record
Save screenshots or PDFs of the official listing pages you checked, with the date. Ask the college for a copy of its current approval or affiliation letter and compare it with the regulator’s website. For questions about whether a degree is treated as equivalent, UGC also runs a separate Equivalence Portal.
Warning signs
- Guaranteed admission or “direct” seats in medical or other regulated courses for a payment.
- No university name on the degree, or a university that is not on UGC’s lists.
- Pressure to pay quickly, cash-only payments, or refusal to show approval letters.
Note: Approval lists are updated regularly. Always confirm a college’s current status on the official website of UGC and the relevant regulator before you pay or join.
