How to become a Dentist

Also called Dental Surgeon, Dental Practitioner

What does a Dentist do?

Dentists diagnose and treat problems of the teeth, gums and mouth. In India you need a BDS degree and must register with a State Dental Council to practise.

A dentist checks teeth and gums, takes X-rays, fills cavities, does root canals and extractions, fits crowns and dentures and teaches patients how to care for their teeth.

In India dentists work in their own clinics, private dental chains, government hospitals, dental colleges and the armed forces. Many specialise later in areas such as orthodontics or oral surgery.
