How to become a Civil Engineer

Also called Site Engineer, Structural Engineer, Junior Engineer (Civil)

What does a Civil Engineer do?

Civil Engineers apply science and maths to planning, designing and building roads, bridges, buildings, water supply and other infrastructure. Most enter the profession through a B.Tech, while polytechnic diploma holders often start in junior engineer roles and can join B.Tech in the second year through lateral entry.

A civil engineer prepares drawings and estimates, checks soil and materials, supervises work on site and makes sure structures are safe and finished on time.

In India civil engineers work on highways, metro rail, housing, dams and urban water projects, both in government departments and with private construction and consulting firms.
