What does a Mechanical Engineer do?
Mechanical Engineers apply science and maths to designing, making and maintaining machines, engines and manufacturing systems. Most enter the profession through a B.Tech, while polytechnic diploma holders often start in junior engineer roles and can join B.Tech in the second year through lateral entry.
A mechanical engineer designs parts and machines, plans production, tests equipment and fixes breakdowns. Much of the work happens on the shop floor and in design software.
In India mechanical engineers work in automobile and machinery companies, power plants, railways, defence production units, HVAC firms and public sector undertakings.
