About Department of Physics, IIT (BHU) Varanasi

The Department of Physics at IIT (BHU) Varanasi, set up in 1985 from the Applied Physics Section, runs an integrated M.Tech in Engineering Physics, an M.Sc and PhD.

Physics at IIT (BHU) Varanasi started as the Applied Physics Section in 1968 and became a full department in 1985. It does not run a stand-alone B.Tech; instead it offers a five-year integrated M.Tech in Engineering Physics through JEE Advanced, and it teaches the core science courses taken by first-year engineering students across the institute. Since 2019-20 it has also run a two-year M.Sc in Physics, entered through IIT JAM. Doctoral scholars join with CSIR-JRF, GATE or INSPIRE support. The department is on the IIT (BHU) campus in Varanasi.
