Utkal University, founded in 1943 at Vani Vihar in Bhubaneswar, is Odisha’s oldest state university, with NAAC A+ and dozens of MA, M.Sc, MBA, MCA, LLM and PhD programmes.

Utkal University was established in 1943 and is the oldest university in Odisha, with its main campus at Vani Vihar in Bhubaneswar. Its own departments run more than forty postgraduate programmes, including MA courses in subjects from English and Odia to Psychology and Economics, M.Sc courses in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biotechnology and Geology, plus M.Com, MCA, M.Tech, several MBA streams, LLM and M.Pharm. Undergraduate options on campus include B.Pharm, B.Sc Nursing and integrated teacher-education courses. The university holds an A+ grade from NAAC and was placed 42nd among state public universities in NIRF 2024. PhD research is offered in close to forty subjects.

Admission

Admission through: Entrance test, Merit

Most postgraduate seats are filled through the Common PG Entrance Test (CPET), with applications through the SAMS Odisha PG portal. Each department then publishes merit, waiting and selection lists, and vacant seats go to spot admission rounds. Self-financing programmes and PhD use the university's own e-admission portal.

Typical eligibility

• Bachelor of Pharmacy: Studying in: Class 12; Science subjects as specified by PCI Education Regulations; institution must be PCI-approved for the degree to count for registration
• Bachelor of Science in Nursing: Studying in: Class 12; Stream: Science (PCB); Must have studied: English; At least 45% marks in Class 12; minimum age 17 on 31 December of the admission year
• Master of Arts: Studying in: UG; At least 50% marks in UG; three- or four-year bachelor's degree; subject requirements vary (e.g. DU M.A. Economics needs Mathematics in Class 12 or 4 credits of Mathematics in the degree)
• Master of Business Administration: Studying in: UG; At least 50% marks in UG; bachelor's degree of at least three years in any discipline
• Master of Commerce: Studying in: UG; At least 50% marks in UG; B.Com (Hons/Pass) or equivalent such as BBA, BMS or BBE (University of Delhi)
• Master of Computer Applications: Studying in: UG; At least 50% marks in UG; BCA, B.Sc (CS/IT) or equivalent
• Master of Laws: Studying in: UG; At least 50% marks in UG; LL.B. or equivalent law degree; final-year LL.B. students may apply
• Master of Pharmacy: Studying in: UG; Enrolled in: Bachelor of Pharmacy; At least 55% marks in UG; B.Pharm from a PCI-approved institution; registration with the State Pharmacy Council (required by JSS AHER within one month of admission)
• Master of Science: Studying in: UG; bachelor's degree in the relevant subject; two-year M.Sc after a three-year bachelor's or one-year M.Sc after a four-year bachelor's; universities set their own marks
• Master of Technology: Studying in: UG; Enrolled in: Bachelor of Technology; At least 50% marks in UG; B.E./B.Tech in a relevant discipline; GATE score preferred
• Doctor of Philosophy: Studying in: PG; At least 55% marks in PG
