About Gauhati University
Gauhati University, founded in 1948 at Jalukbari, Guwahati, is Assam’s oldest state university, with NAAC A+ and ninth place among state universities in NIRF 2025.
Gauhati University was established in 1948 under the Gauhati University Act passed by the Assam legislature, making it the oldest university in the state. Its main campus is at Gopinath Bardoloi Nagar, Jalukbari, in western Guwahati. It is a collegiate state university with about 45 departments across six faculties covering arts, science, commerce, law, technology and medicine, and it affiliates many colleges across Assam. The university runs master’s programmes in over 40 departments, integrated and four-year undergraduate programmes, a three-year LLB and PhD research. It holds a NAAC A+ grade and was placed ninth among state universities in NIRF 2025.

Admission
Admission through: Merit, Entrance test
For 2026-27, PG, PhD and integrated programmes are applied for on the GU Samarth portal, while UG admissions in affiliated colleges run through the Assam Samarth portal. PG seats are filled on merit or through entrance tests, and PhD admission uses an entrance test. The three-year LLB uses ASSAMCAT scores.
