Thiagarajar College of Engineering was set up in 1957 by the philanthropist Karumuttu Thiagarajan Chettiar in Madurai. It is a government-aided autonomous institution affiliated to Anna University and approved by AICTE, and its programmes have held NBA accreditation since 1998. Students can choose B.E. or B.Tech branches, a B.Arch, a B.Des, M.E./M.Tech courses, an MCA, a five-year integrated M.Sc in Data Science and an M.Plan. Research is offered through MS (by Research) and PhD. The college received NAAC A++ with a CGPA of 3.56 in its second cycle, and its home page reports 33rd place in NIRF 2025 Architecture and Planning.

Admission
Admission through: Merit, Entrance test
Most B.E., B.Tech and B.Arch seats are filled through Tamil Nadu state counselling (TNEA, with NATA for architecture), and the rest under the management quota. PG engineering, MCA and M.Plan admissions follow TANCET/CEETA-PG or GATE scores. MS (by Research) and PhD candidates apply through Anna University research admissions.

- Bachelor of Technology: Studying in: Class 12; Must have studied: Physics; Must have studied: Mathematics; At least 45% marks in Class 12; one more subject from the AICTE list (e.g. Chemistry, Biotechnology, Computer Science, Biology)
- Master of Computer Applications: Studying in: UG; At least 50% marks in UG; BCA, B.Sc (CS/IT) or equivalent
- Master of Planning: Studying in: UG; B.Plan, B.Arch or B.E./B.Tech (Civil or Planning); SPA Vijayawada asks 60% or CGPA 6.5 (55% or 6.0 for SC/ST)
- Master of Science: Studying in: UG; bachelor's degree in the relevant subject; two-year M.Sc after a three-year bachelor's or one-year M.Sc after a four-year bachelor's; universities set their own marks
