The Department of Computer Science and Engineering at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, set up in 1997, offers a B.Tech, M.Tech in CSE and in AI and Data Science, an executive M.Tech and PhD.

Computer science at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad dates from 1997. The department now runs a B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering, a regular M.Tech in CSE, an M.Tech in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, and an executive M.Tech in AI and Data Science for working professionals. PhD study is possible full time, part time or as an external candidate. Research covers artificial intelligence and machine learning, parallel and distributed computing, cryptography and network security, wireless networks, and image and video processing, with sponsored projects from MeitY, DST, UGC and CSIR. The department reports more than 1,000 students and organises the RAIT conference series.
