The CSE department at IIT Kharagpur, set up in 1980, admits about 90 B.Tech, 60 dual-degree and 70 M.Tech students a year and also runs MS and PhD research.

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering at IIT Kharagpur was started in 1980 and is one of the best-known computing departments in the IIT system. Each year it takes in roughly 90 students for the four-year B.Tech, about 60 for the dual degree and around 70 for the M.Tech. Research students form a large group too, with about 40 MS and about 100 PhD scholars on the rolls. The department runs labs in artificial intelligence, cryptography, formal verification, machine learning and natural language processing, mobile computing, secure embedded architectures and visual information processing. It sits on the main IIT Kharagpur campus in Paschim Medinipur district of West Bengal.

Admission

B.Tech and dual-degree seats at IIT Kharagpur are filled through JEE Advanced and JoSAA counselling. M.Tech admission is run by the institute GATE office, with applications through the IIT Kharagpur ERP portal for the 2026 cycle. PhD applicants are selected by the institute on academic record, a written test and/or interview.
