About Department of Mechanical Engineering, IIT (BHU) Varanasi
The Department of Mechanical Engineering at IIT (BHU) Varanasi, started in 1919 with the Banaras Engineering College, offers B.Tech (120 seats), a dual degree, M.Tech in four areas and PhD.
Mechanical engineering is the oldest teaching department of IIT (BHU) Varanasi: it began in 1919 under Professor Charles A. King, the first principal of the Banaras Engineering College, and the department says it is now the largest in the institute. The four-year B.Tech admits 120 students a year through JEE Advanced and ends with a major research project. A five-year Integrated Dual Degree gives both B.Tech and M.Tech. The two-year M.Tech and the PhD cover four areas: machine design, thermal and fluid engineering, production engineering, and industrial management and engineering. PhD admission calls come twice a year, with a written test and interview.
