About Department of Mechanical Engineering, IIT Madras
As old as IIT Madras itself, the Mechanical Engineering department runs B.Tech, dual degrees, four M.Tech specialisations, MS (Research) and PhD.
Mechanical Engineering at IIT Madras has been part of the institute from its start. Undergraduates can take the B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering or a dual degree with a focus on Mechanical Design, Intelligent Manufacturing or Thermal Engineering. The M.Tech is offered in Thermal Engineering, Mechanical Design, Manufacturing Engineering and Computational Engineering for Mechanical Systems. Research students join the MS (Research) or PhD, which includes a candidacy exam. Research is grouped into six areas, among them computational engineering, advanced manufacturing, energy science and micro-nano and bio sciences, and the department works with companies such as Caterpillar, Tata Steel and Boeing.
