About Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, IIT Madras
Founded as the Department of Metallurgy in 1959, MME at IIT Madras offers a B.Tech, M.Tech (including Semiconductor Materials Technology), MS by Research and PhD.
The department began in 1959, the year IIT Madras was founded, as the Department of Metallurgy and took its present name in 2003. Its early focus on industrial metallurgy has widened into many areas of materials science. The B.Tech is a four-year course entered through JEE Advanced. The two-year M.Tech, entered through GATE, is offered in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering and in a Semiconductor Materials Technology specialisation. The MS by Research usually takes about two and a half years, and the five-year PhD admits students twice a year after a written test and interview. Research covers metal forming, joining, microscopy, additive manufacturing and ceramics.
